Hamilton’s What Next?

The first annual new music festival in Hamilton What Next? was a schmorgasborg of riches.

We heard all kind of great stuff and weird juxtaposits as various incarnations of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra plus many guests from Toronto and elsewhere performed what was probably definitive renderings of lotsa new commissions,

as well as some ‘old’ (ie, 1960’s) chestnuts including Bartok, Schnittke and a beautiful little piece by Gydrgy Kurtags called The Little Predicament.

Also worthy of singling out was Kelly-Marie Murphy’s Black Sand, an HPO commission for orchestra – which we heard in the incredibly intimate Hamilton Place Studio Theatre, even though it called for big orchestral forces. It was like you were sitting inside the orchestra…

A raging success in a town not well-known for new concert music performances during a time not condusive to selling tickets.

Good to see old friends from the Royal Conservatory of Music !
